The Origin of Our Name
Many of the words we use today have their roots in Ancient Greek and Latin. This is especially true in medical scientific terminology. In Ancient Greek, hygieinÄ“ technÄ“ is means the “(art) of health”. Greek mythology tells us Hygieia (ὑγίεια) was the goddess of health, cleanliness and hygiene. Hygieia was the daughter of Asclepius (ἈσκληπιÏŒς), the greek god of medicine, whose snake entwined staff is still a common symbol of the healthcare professions.
The ancient Greeks understood there was a connection between cleanliness and illness and believed that the art of hygiene was could prevent illness. It would take science over 2,000 years to explain how this connection worked. Nonetheless, the ancient greeks considered these practices essential, and held them in almost mythical esteem.
As a company devoted to prevention, we chose the name Hygieinos (ὑγιεινÏŒς), the ancient Greek work meaning “healthy” or “good/beneficial for health”. A tribute to the Ancient Greeks, who in a sense instituted some of the earliest infection prevention policies and practices.

Meet our Founder
Thomas C. Roome
Hygieinos Consulting developed from a simple commitment; to protect people from preventable infections. Hygieinos Consulting's CEO and Directing Consultant Thomas C. Roome's passion for Infection Prevention and Control was sparked by the passing of a loved one. As a young man, Thomas lost his grandmother, Mary Catherine, to complications of Healthcare-Associated Clostridioides difficile she contracted following a routine colonoscopy. This ingrained in him a simple, yet powerful conviction; that no person should become ill or die with a preventable infections because they sought medical care.

Later, after attending medical school and earning his Master's of Public Health, Thomas was introduced to the field of Infection Prevention and Control in 2020, and cut his teeth as an Infection Control Coordinator at the Illinois Department of Public Health during the COVID-19 Pandemic. Practicing Infection Prevention and Control in Public Health provided the opportunity to gain experience with a wide range of settings, populations, pathogens, practices, challenges, and required a thorough understanding of public health recommendations healthcare regulation. Working directly with and advising healthcare facilities and organizations in a public health capacity also allowed me to build a deeper understanding of how healthcare works, beyond the experience he gained as a healthcare provider.
